Millennium Village podium – built to last

Project type: Residential, Social Housing

Division: Surfacing & Coatings, Landscaping

Way back in 2014, The TP Group was approached to consult on a deteriorating Resin Bound Gravel surface at the Millennium Village in Greenwich.

The surface in question had previously been laid by another company and sadly a number of errors had been made which ultimately meant the surfaces would have to be replaced. The key stakeholder (Greenwich Millennium Village Ltd) was understandably upset at this state of affairs, not least because it would take some years to raise the funds required for the work.

Fast forward five years and the client had achieved their necessary fundraising. Based on how impressed they had been throughout the initial consultation phase (and our excellent reputation) Greenwich Millennium Village turned to The TP Group to carry out the rework.

Logistically, the job was challenging. This densely populated area had numerous weight restrictions on surrounding access points and it was stipulated that disruption to local residents must be avoided. We would therefore need to be smart with our planning on this project.

Using a specialised crane, we managed to negotiate access without damaging the adjacent surfaces. Utilising an extensive scaffolding and rubbish chute system, we found a way to move materials on and off the worksite. A system of communication was established so that daily updates could be distributed to the residents regarding progress, thus helping manage expectations around disruption and road closures.

With this strategy, we were able to remove the entire faulty surface before regulating and re-grading the loose aggregate substrate material underneath. This provided a stable base on which to install the new surface dressing and helped our client control their budget by negating the need for a new macadam foundation.

Finally, our expert installers laid Addagrip’s Terrabase Rustic product in the Oak colour blend to complete the project.

The colour chosen helped enhance the podium area and beautifully complimented the adjacent soft landscaping. Not only had we created a bright and relaxing communal space for the local residents, but also this was a job done properly; it will last for many decades to come.

Under tricky conditions, our team of four operatives completed the work over eight days without causing undue inconvenience to those living at the Millennium Village. The TP Group, our client and the residents were unanimously thrilled with the results.
