Specialist paint job for a 25ft Dragon at Hampton Court Palace

Project type: Hospitality & Leisure

Division: Painting Solutions, Surfacing & Coatings

It’s not every day you get asked to paint a dragon, but in 2016, we were approached to do just that.

Hampton Court Palace needed a finishing flourish of paint to liven up a 25ft fiberglass giant in time for the grand opening of their Magic Garden. Besides the specialist painting job, scope of works for this project also included the installation of Addagrip’s 3mm Autumn Toffee Terrabound product to surrounding surfaces. We had just two days to cost and carry out the work before the gardens were officially opened by HRH the Duchess of Cambridge. No pressure, then.

The TP Group’s excellent supplier network meant we were able to prepare a suitable paint specification within the very tight deadline. Application of the paint required three specialised industrial coatings to protect the dragon from the elements. The final layer consisted of volatile organic compounds, polymers and pigment to achieve a lifelike effect that would last outside when exposed to rain, wind and sunshine. A Terrabound Resin Bound Gravel product was chosen for application to the 850m2 of surrounding pathways.

The finished paint job provided a terrifyingly lifelike dragon for the Magic Garden that will be enjoyed by Hampton Court visitors for decades to come. The new Resin Bound Gravel surface is both hardwearing and low-maintenance. Hampton Court Palace said: ‘We were blown away with The TP Group’s swift response and their professionalism. Their expert technicians made us feel at ease that we would meet an incredibly tight deadline and we couldn’t be happier with the quality of the work. So much so that we have since used them for a number of other paint and resurfacing jobs around the grounds.’
