Pool borders for an upmarket gym chain
The Acton branch of the upmarket gym chain, David Lloyd, underwent an ambitious £9m refurbishment in 2017/18. Amongst the work required was the addition of swimming pools, the construction of a modern spa, and installation of high-quality racquet courts.
Our client, Interserve Construction Ltd, appointed Total Protection Group to provide the surround of the gym’s new outdoor swimming pool.
There were numerous challenges to overcome: undulations in the existing substrate would have to be accounted for and levelled; adequate drainage covers and channels would have to be carefully planned and built; day joins would need to be concealed to meet the high aesthetic standards of the gym; and suitable perimeters would need to be installed to provide decorative edge detail and abut to the Resin Bound Gravel. As with all projects of this nature, the safety of the end-users was paramount, so suitable non-slip properties would have to be considered.
After undergoing an extensive consultation on materials, Addagrip’s Addabound product was selected in a colour blend of 3mm Dune. Before applying the final surface dressing, Total Protection Group had to first conduct significant preparation work. We levelled the substrate through excavation and application of a compatible screed material to the required depth of 12mm. Aluminium Edge Detail was sourced and installed to contain the final surface. Drainage channels were dug then covered, allowing easy access and maintenance without affecting the stylish design. Finally, the surface was laid in a single application to provide a smooth finish without day joins – all ready in time for the health club’s grand opening.
Work was completed on schedule to a standard that delighted our client, David Lloyd Gyms and its members alike. The surface that surrounds the outdoor pool is graceful, safe and very durable. It will be enjoyed by hardy outdoor swimmers for many decades to come.
